The question of Forgiveness
“Forgiveness is difficult and trying and painful and unending,
but it can be real perhaps, and holy sometimes too.”
— Matthew Ichihashi Potts
Forgiveness is at once so straightforward of an idea and so complex of an idea that it is difficult to define - let alone practice. We pray “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” but it may have been a long while since we truly asked for forgiveness, offered it, or felt it was necessary. Many of us have experienced a call to forgiveness that felt forced or weaponized, have struggled to forgive those who have seriously harmed us, or have wondered why it’s important to forgive.
For six weeks, our community (including children and youth) will take up the question of forgiveness - the why, how, who, and when of forgiving, forgetting, repenting, and reconciling with the hope of getting more comfortable with being in conflict, naming harm, restoring relationship when possible, and living with a sense of grace and also accountability with each other.

Scripture & DIALOGUE Questions
All are invited to hear and discern the Word of God together in dialogue at Emmaus Way each week. While the communal and embodied experience of dialogical preaching can't quite be recreated outside of the Sunday gathering, follow along here with the scripture passages and dialogue questions that are guiding our weekly conversations.

EWAY Youth & Kids
During this series, all our children ages 3 to 18 will be exploring forgiveness at an age appropriate level.
1st-5th graders will learn the art of the apology and act out biblical stories of harm, forgiveness, and reconciliation, such as the Prodigal Son and the Jacob and Esau stories in Genesis.
Youth will explore steps and movements in the cycles of conflict and reconciliation, read Bible passages that encourage forgiveness, and ask tough questions about what forgiveness actually looks like in their lives.
We will end the series with an intergenerational Sunday where we share with each other what we have learned and how we are being changed and challenged by the concept of forgiveness.
If you'd like to know more about what our children and youth are doing each Sunday, please don't hesitate to reach out to us here.
